La ilaaha illa Allaah: The Expression of True Freedom
In the Name of Allaah, Most Gracious Most Merciful,
In a time when the word ‘freedom’ is thrown left and right, and forced down the throats of the Muslims, and used as a justification for war in the Muslim world, the question arises to some, what is freedom?
Freedom, as stated by Western idealogy, consists of the pursuit of one’s own interests, ideas, and desires with as a little constraint as possible. It emphasizes the ‘will’ of the individual, as opposed to the ‘will’ of society.
This is not true freedom, as its results are witnessable to any person. Individuals in the West are bound by status quos, peer pressure, ‘moral bias’, aggressive media, constant bombardments of advertisements and resprensations of whats worshipped by the majority. The soul of westerner is put in a harsh, painful, and unmerciful position, in that it must take the constant bombardment of ideas, arrogance, and the glorification of desires, all without any guidance from the Lord of the Heavens and the earth.
Is this freedom?
Is it freedom when the basis of society runs upon an atheistic principle of capitalism, which is based upon a supposed innate ‘trait’ in human beings to seek after the ‘al-mighty’ dollar bill. And likewise, the implied fear of poverty that western capitalism is established upon can be seen by anyone.
 Is this freedom?
Can one be free when his fear, trust, hope, love is scattered amongst a multitude of materialistic pursuits?
Is one free when his mind, heart, and soul, are constantly bombarded with how others think, feel, believe, act, behave, all out of their own desires and limited perspectives?
Can one be free when all he can see is the narrowness of wordly things, worldly pursuits, and lowly meaningless things like money, sex, and desires which disappear with the death of humanity?
The reality is, true freedom, is established upon laa ilaaha illa Allaah (there is no god but Allaah). It is a declaration of freedom from every servitude except unto the Creator, Controller, and Sustainer of all that exists. There is no power or strength except with Him, and true freedom lies in believing this, and actualizing this in one’s heart, statements and actions.
أَلَيْسَ اللَّه٠بÙكَاÙ٠عَبْدَه٠وَيÙخَوّÙÙÙونَكَ بÙالَّذÙينَ Ù…ÙÙ† دÙونÙÙ‡Ù
“Is not Allah Sufficient for His slave? Yet they try to frighten you with those (whom they worship) besides Him! ”
The false disbelieving concept of ‘freedom’ portrayed by the West tells the human being clearly, in plain terms, recognizable to everyone, that Allaah almighty, unto whom perfect attributes Belong, and who created every human being, is not sufficient for that human being. But rather, under the banner of ’secular democracy’, the west forces the people to believe that Allaah, their only Lord and sustainer, is not sufficient for them, but rather they must refer judgement to other than Him, and put their trust in other than Him.
This is not freedom, and this brings absolutely no peace of mind to an individual, so much so that if you were to observe any westerner and talk to them, it is rare that you will find even one that has real peace of mind, but rather is soul is attached and enslaved to a multitude of things, usually being at the top of the list, wealth, for it is the drive of any society.
This is the likeness of those who commit shirk with Allaah:
 وَمَن ÙŠÙشْرÙكْ بÙاللَّه٠Ùَكَأَنَّمَا خَرَّ Ù…ÙÙ†ÙŽ السَّمَاء ÙَتَخْطَÙÙه٠الطَّيْر٠أَوْ تَهْوÙÙŠ بÙه٠الرّÙÙŠØÙ ÙÙÙŠ مَكَان٠سَØÙيقÙ
“and whoever assigns partners to Allah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky, and the birds had snatched him, or the wind had thrown him to a far off place.”
Ibn al-Qayyim comments:
‘So ponder over this example, and how precise it is in describing the state of he who commits shirk with Allah, and place his hopwe with other than Him. In this example, it is as if He has drawn a comparison between the exaltedness, vastness and nobility to tawhid to that of the skies… and HJe has compared between he who leaves tawhid and iman to one who falls from the skies to the lowest pits, where there is nothing but ocnstriction and pain. And the birs that tear him to peaces and break his bones apart are the shayatin, which Allah sent upon him to agitate him, and to take him to his place of destruction. So every single shaytan has a piece of his religion and heart, just like every bird has a piece of his bones and flesh. And the wind that blows him to a remote, desolate place, is his very desire, which is what carries him to throw himself to the lowest of all places, and fall from the skies.’
This description is completely applicable to the hopeless, painful, constricting nature of Western society. How it appeals to the desire of the human being and he is dragged into a pit of self-enslavement, by which the shayatin amongst men constantly eat away whatever dignity is left of him.
And we ask Allah to make us from amongst those who are truly free, and submissive to Him alone.
